Now 23 years of age, Ian has also lent his talents to film scores. Most recently Ashby appears in the score of a documentary about the work of legendary poet and activist Toni Morrison. “Foreigners Home” is a breathtaking exhibition of poetry, animation, music, and interviews centered around Toni’s 2018 trip to the Louvre. The film was shown at multiple film festivals across the globe such as Cannes and the Montreal Film Festival. Ian has also performed overseas and collaborated with many storied organizations across Europe. The Bavarian Youth orchestra featured Ian as a bassist and percussionist when Ian was just 16 years old, then more recently Ian collaborated with the Focusyear band in Basel Switzerland in October 2022. Ian studied privately with bassist Larry Grenadier and performed alongside legendary percussionist, pianist, and composer Jorge Rossy. As we speak, Ian is in the process of creating his newest project “The Modern Modinha” where he will use interviews with world renowned Brazilian and Portuguese artists and intensive research and composition with Ian’s teacher; bassist, composer, and educator Linda May Han Oh, helps Ian with his plans of recording this original three piece suite later this year.
